The craft record
The tawny owl keeps the third watch — the hours between midnight and three, when the forest is most awake. He is carved in pale linden against a walnut case, feather by feather, five hundred and twenty hours, his talons closed around the ridge of the roof as a living owl closes them in sleep.
Waldkauz carries the house's night silence: a small brass lever stills the bellows after ten. It was built for a bedroom wall, and the movement is regulated a breath slower than the others — the seventh generation maintains the sixth's conviction that a bedroom clock should never hurry.
