The craft record
Tannenruh is carved from linden left unstained and unwaxed except for a single pass of cold-pressed oil: the snow in the relief is the wood itself. The boughs hang at the true angle of loaded fir — the carver worked from branches brought in from the January forest and kept on the bench until they thawed.
It is the deepest relief the house has cut in this generation, six centimetres at the crown. Six hundred and forty hours. The dial is kept nearly bare so that nothing competes with the weight of the snow.
